![]() The number of mods - like the actual quantity - is less relevant here than their content and what they do. My working theory is that this is mostly done with redundant textures - so it not only reduces the memory-hogging, it also manages to keep memory-usage staying below a critical threshold when its needed the most, thus stabilizing the mod-initialization process of RW on lower-end hardware when RAM bottlenecks the process.Īll those things count for PC & SD basically just the same - it's just that dealing with those aspects is usually easier and less tedious on PC. I have admitedly no clue what FGL does exactly - and nobody could explain it to me so far - but it DOES add some sort of GC, resulting in some unused data getting culled in the later stages of mod-initialization. Like if you have two re-textures changing the same vanilla texture, only the last one loaded will be put on the atlas and used ingame, but the asset-loading happens before those textures are tied and attributed to the actual ingame entities using them - and the game keeps all those dupes in memory and does only VERY little garbage collection - they even stay there after the game finished loading - and there's no good way to prevent that. Rimworld will also load texture-duplicates and keep them in memory. At base, Rimworld will load ALL textures from mods it finds in viable mod-folders - so if you run a texture-pack with upscaled mod-textures, it will load ALL of them, no matter if you even use those mods. That will become more important on modlists affected by texture-redundancy. The largest impact on vRAM-usage might have Taran's Faster Game Loading anyways, since it improves on the GC to flush out unused assets to free up memory at startup. So usually that means that you either run 'Todds' (converter, found on Dub's Discord) by hand (command-line) - convert with RimPy on another device (PC) and then copy over your mods onto the SD - or you try using Todds through RimSort directly on the SD, but it's still in heavy development and takes a while to set up properly. The latter part is not etched in stone - you can convert the textures however you like, RimPy is just the easiest to approach method for regular users - and the fact that it seems to have issues running on Steam Deck makes this part of the process more complicated as it has to be. dds what is usually done with RimPy's integrated converter. That's the core issue - like I've said, there are ways to cut down on the excessive behavior of RW hogging vRAM (and RAM if the vRAM usage flushes over) but there's first and foremost a limit to what can be done, and in addition part of it usually means converting mod-textures to. r/RimWorldStreams - For all of your videos and streams needs r/RimWorldTales - /u/srgrafo's Rimworld Comic Series r/RimworldSwap - Swap saves with other players r/ShitRimworldSays - /r/nocontext posts about /r/RimWorld r/RimworldArt - Posts about Rimworld Artwork (not fanart!) r/Rimreddit - Colonists playing only on a single planet r/RimWorldPorn - High Quality Images of Rimworld Colonies No discussing pirated versions of the game.
